Prelude To A Far More Severe Disruption

By converting seismograph readings from a magnitude 5.6 earthquake that took place in Oklahoma in 2016 into a musical form, this work highlights the event of that earthquake, the second largest in Oklahoma’s history, and its link to fracking operations. Fracking is the process of injecting liquid at high pressure into subterranean rocks to force open existing fissures and extract oil or gas.

In 2016 alone, the United States generated over 3.4 million tons of electronic waste, a figure that stands to grow, driven by our cultural obsession with tech upgrades and of-the-moment gadgets. Where do our electronic relics end up once we finally decide it’s time to recycle them? And what does our relationship with these outdated technologies say about us as a culture?
